Garuda drone in URI (movie) Vs Reality

Garuda drone in URI (movie) Vs Reality

Garuda drone in URI (movie) Vs Reality

Does a bird like drone from Movie – Uri: The Surgical Strike really exist?

The use of drones in movies has become increasingly popular in recent years, with filmmakers incorporating them into their stories to add an element of realism and excitement. However, movies like URI often depict drones with features that are not yet possible in reality.

In the movie, Garud is a robotic ‘eagle’ unmanned aerial vehicle with advanced features such as a high-resolution camera with 16 megapixels and 7.2x digital zoom, night vision, and infrared capabilities. It can fly continuously for 12 kilometers and hover in place to launch and land. The military in the movie uses it for spying purposes.

While some of the features depicted in the movie are available in today’s drones, such as high-resolution cameras and night vision capabilities, others like infrared technology and the ability to fly continuously for 12 kilometers are not yet possible. Furthermore, the ability to hover in place for extended periods of time is also a challenge for most drones due to their limited battery life.

It is worth noting that Garud is depicted as a robotic eagle, which is an ornithopter, a type of drone that mimics the flight of birds by flapping its wings. While ornithopters do exist, they are still limited in their capabilities and cannot accommodate most of the features depicted in the movie. This is because the flapping wings require more energy to generate lift and propulsion than a traditional drone that uses propellers.

In conclusion, while drones have come a long way in terms of technology and capabilities, the features depicted in URI’s Garud are not yet possible in reality. Furthermore, the use of an ornithopter makes it even more unlikely to achieve the same level of performance and capabilities. However, drones continue to be used in a variety of applications, including photography, surveillance, and search and rescue operations, among others, with ongoing efforts to improve their capabilities.
