India's Drone Rules 2021 and the subsequent UAS Rules mandate that anyone operating a drone commercially — or operating a Medium or Large category drone for any purpose — must hold a valid Remote Pilot Certificate issued by the DGCA. Certificates are tied to specific drone categories (Small, Medium, Large) and require both ground theory training and hands-on flight training at a DGCA-authorised RPTO. Training hours, syllabus content, and examination standards are all prescribed by the DGCA. Who Needs a Remote Pilot Certificate (RPC)?
Anyone flying a Medium or Large category drone — commercially or recreationally — must hold a valid RPC. Commercial operators of Small category drones in controlled or restricted airspace also require certification. If you are being paid to fly — for real estate, agriculture, surveying, inspection, events, or film — you legally need an RPC. Flying without one exposes you to DGCA enforcement action and invalidates any insurance coverage on the flight.
Small vs Medium vs Large — Which Category Do You Need?
DGCA classifies drones by all-up weight. Small category covers drones between 2 kg and 25 kg — the most common commercial segment including DJI Matrice, agricultural sprayers, and survey drones. Medium covers 25–150 kg. Large covers above 150 kg. Most working pilots need a Small category RPC as a minimum. Agricultural sprayer operators typically train on Medium category. What Happens After You Get Certified?
Your RPC is valid for 10 years and is registered on the Digital Sky platform alongside your drone's UIN (Unique Identification Number).
